Garden in the Countryside

The large exisitng garden needed updating to sensitively anchor the traditional but recently extended and beautifully modernised home to the garden and open landscape beyond. A new York stone terrace was created to extend out from the new glass fronted extension. Views from the dining terrace take you down the diamond laid york stone path and traditional box parterres to the contemporary water feature made from stainless steel, surrounded with tightly clipped Buxus sempervirens. The water reflects the big skies above. There are stunning views from the dining terrace up through the newly created formal garden and hornbeam avenue to a simple gate and path mown through the long grass in the adjoining meadow. With the path winding out of sight you are encouraged to explore the whole landscape. The client was keen to retain a large expanse of lawn but happy to lose the 'sports field' feel. Clipped topiary pyramids planted within the lawn separate the lower formal garden from the large area and provide wonderful sculptural moments, especially when the sun creates long shadows at different times of the day.

Traditional materials found on site and used within the original garden are re-employed within the design. Work is beautifully and sypathetically executed on site by Dutton and Peter's LTD.

With soil fertility improved and drainage installed, soft, billowing herbaceous perennials partnered with small shrubs and clipped Buxus sempervirens sheres ease the hard edges into the quiet landscape providing interest throughout the year.

This is an on going phased project.
